The Reception

Our wedding reception is taking place at Hartwell House, a Jacobean and Georgian country house which is owned by the National Trust but is being operated as a hotel and spa. The house is set in over 90 acres of gardens and parkland, and it was built between 1570 and 1617 by Sir Alexander Hampden.

Over almost a thousand years, Hartwell House has had many notable residents, including William Peveral, a knight of William the Conqueror; of John Earl of Mortaigne who succeeded his brother Richard the Lion Heart as King of England in 1199; and its most famous resident, Louis XVIII, exiled King of France, who held court there from 1809 to 1814. Hartwell House is also the place where, in 1850, the Royal Meteorological Society was formed – so let’s hope the weather will be on our side for the big day!

Throughout the Second World War, Hartwell House served as an Army base for British and American troops. It was later used as a finishing school and secretarial college. A fire in 1963 caused extensive damage to the property, but it was purchased by Historic House Hotels in the late 20th century who painstakingly restored the interiors, and it reopened as a hotel in 1989. In 2008, Hartwell House was donated to the National Trust.

Hartwell House is a truly stunning property, which we absolutely fell in love with on our first visit. We really hope you will enjoy the beautiful architecture, breathtaking rooms and peaceful gardens and grounds as much as we do.
